Advice for All Aspiring University Student-Leaders in the 2023/2024 Academic Year

Introduction

Embarking on the journey to pursue a position of leadership is both an exciting and challenging endeavor. As you aspire to attain a leadership role in the upcoming academic year, it is essential to recognize the significance of this opportunity and approach it with wisdom, integrity, and a servant's heart. In this article, we will explore valuable advice that can guide you through the process, drawing inspiration from biblical scriptures and insights from a story. Remember, leadership is a calling and a gift, and your intentions and character will shape your impact on those you are called to serve.

 Divine Appointment: Acknowledging God's Role

Matthew 22:14 states, "For many are called, but few are chosen." This biblical verse reminds us that leadership positions are not merely handed out arbitrarily; they are divinely ordained. As you pursue your aspirations, understand that it is God who ultimately appoints leaders. Daniel 2:21 further emphasizes this truth: "And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding." God operates in a systematic manner, and His timing is perfect. Therefore, humbly acknowledge His sovereignty and trust that if a position is meant for you, it will come to fruition in due time.

Purpose and Service: The Heart of Leadership

When considering a leadership role, it is crucial to reflect on your motivations and intentions. Are you seeking recognition or personal gain, or do you genuinely desire to make a positive difference and serve others? Every leader is called to solve problems and address the needs of the people they serve. God appoints leaders to be instruments of His care and guidance. Therefore, prioritize the well-being of your fellow students, staff, and faculty, and commit yourself to selfless service. Remember, true leadership is not about ruling over others but about becoming a servant-leader who uplifts and empowers those entrusted to their care.

Humility: A Virtue that Sustains

Humility is a foundational virtue that underpins effective leadership. God opposes the proud, as stated in Daniel 4:28-34, where King Nebuchadnezzar's pride led to his downfall. To avoid a similar fate, cultivate humility as you pursue leadership. Stay grounded and guard against the pitfalls of arrogance, pride, and self-centeredness. True leaders recognize that their position is a responsibility, not a status symbol. Ephesians 5:1-4 reminds us to imitate God's humility, displaying love, kindness, and genuine concern for others. By embracing humility, you demonstrate your readiness to be an instrument of God's grace and make a lasting impact on your university community.

God's Choice Prevails

Once upon a time at the prestigious University of Education, Winneba - South Campus, a tale unfolded that left everyone astounded and challenged their preconceived notions. I was there and I was a witness because it happened in my department. In the heart of the campus, an intense battle for a coveted position in the department was underway. One particular individual, whose name echoed through the halls, seemed destined for victory. Renowned and well-connected, he had garnered immense support from the lecturers, friends and more creating an atmosphere of certainty around his triumph.

Meanwhile, his opponent, a humble and hardworking individual, toiled quietly in the depths of anonymity. Aware of his lack of renown and influential connections, he chose a different approach. He dedicated his time to mastering his craft, silently building a solid foundation of knowledge and expertise. While others basked in the spotlight, he worked diligently behind the scenes, aware that his chances seemed slim.

As the day of voting arrived, anticipation filled the air. The atmosphere crackled with excitement, mixed with a subtle sense of disbelief that anyone could challenge the favored candidate. Even the opponent himself, as he cast his gaze upon the bustling polling station which was at the forecourt of the department, felt a heavy weight of doubt and weariness. The odds were stacked against him, and he contemplated an early departure, convinced that victory would elude him.

But destiny had other plans in store. As the counting began, the suspense gripped the place. Each vote was tallied, breaths held in anticipation. The announcement echoed through the halls, the forecourts, people waiting for the result on the WhatsApp groups, sending ripples of astonishment throughout the gathering. Against all expectations, the underdog emerged victorious, claiming the prestigious position that was once presumed out of reach.

The place erupted in a symphony of gasps and applause, mingled with whispers of disbelief. How could this have happened? The members of the society or department, who had placed their bets on the renowned candidate, were left speechless. The opponent, who had braced himself for defeat, was flooded with a mix of astonishment and exhilaration. His quiet dedication and unwavering commitment had prevailed against the odds, earning him the respect and admiration of all.

This extraordinary turn of events served as a powerful reminder that sometimes, success is not determined by popularity or connections alone. It was a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and unwavering faith in one's abilities. The underdog had risen above expectations, defying conventional wisdom and leaving an indelible mark on the campus community.

As news of this incredible triumph spread like wildfire, the story became an inspiration to many. It ignited a renewed sense of hope and belief that, indeed, dreams can come true against all odds. The story of what happened at my department made my department became a symbol of resilience and determination, reminding everyone that it is not merely human efforts that shape outcomes, but a divine hand that sets kings.

The tale of the underdog's victory would forever be etched in the annals of the institution, serving as a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and the unpredictable nature of life's journeys. It taught everyone to never underestimate the potential hidden within the quietest corners, for greatness can emerge from the unlikeliest of sources.

Spiritual Warfare: The Power of Prayer and Fasting

Aspiring to leadership positions requires more than practical preparation; it entails engaging in spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 acknowledges the battles against unseen forces: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." In this spiritual realm, there may be individuals resorting to dubious means such as consulting demonic entities or using charms to gain an advantage. However, as a person of faith, your greatest strength lies in prayer and fasting. Seek divine guidance, cover your aspirations in prayer, and rely on the strength and protection that God provides. Maintain your integrity and refuse to compromise your principles in pursuit of victory.

The Importance of Practical Preparation

While faith and spirituality are vital, it is crucial to complement them with practical aspects of leadership preparation. Your personal qualifications, knowledge, and skills play significant roles in your journey to becoming an effective leader. Invest time in honing your abilities, expanding your knowledge base, and developing your leadership qualities. Furthermore, devise strategic and thoughtful campaign strategies to communicate your vision and engage with your peers effectively. Remember, faith without action is incomplete. Combine your spiritual foundation with practical efforts to maximize your potential and increase your chances of success.

Conclusion

As you embark on your quest for leadership positions in the 2023/2024 academic year, remember that leadership is a divine calling and gift. Approach your aspirations with humility, recognizing that God appoints leaders to serve His people. Examine your intentions and commit to selfless service, prioritizing the needs of others above personal gain. Cultivate humility, guarding against pride and arrogance, and remain grounded in the understanding that leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege. Do not be swayed by popular opinion, for God's choice prevails above all. Engage in spiritual warfare through prayer and fasting, trusting in God's guidance and protection. Lastly, combine faith with practical preparation, equipping yourself with the necessary qualifications and strategies to effectively lead. May this advice guide you on your path to becoming impactful leaders within your university communities.
